I am thinking of purchasing a simmental heifer to breed with my bull. I wanted to know if anyone has done this cross and if so, how happy were they with the results?
Thanks

There are a couple breeders in MN that have semintal cross cattle, They tend to be more framy and not as easy doing, also cows can be not as gentle tempered as the true British Whites. My own personal experience, I'm getting away from them as the calves produced as 1/2 are fine and then the 3/4's is where they don't have the width of frame I like, and occasionaly the nice temprament I demand. They do taste good though. If you wish to experiment with other breeds, look at Gelbvigh, Hereford, or Devon.

I cross bred two Simmental cows that I had bought to carry a couple of White Park embyos. Last year was the first cross bred calves out of them. One had a bull calf that I steered and the other a heifer.
I sold the steer to the feed yard along with my purebreds. I will say that he was a big growthy calf and grossed me more money than the other calves but I suspect that mom ate her fair share and then some at the feed bunk.
I still have the heifer she is mostly black with some white on her face. I havn't decided what to do with her yet. On second thought if you would like a 1/2 blood to crossbreed she is available.

I used some Simmental / White cross hiefers years ago. Did not continue as they did not milk well. These were the "old style" Simmental cattle.

I just had a simmental white cross bull calf. He weighs 73 pounds and looks good. He will make a good steer.

I had some simmental white crossed cows 20+ years ago. They did not milk as good as my purebred whites and they ate a lot more. They were big framy cows, not very efficient.

Not for Simmental but question for Braunvieh. Does anyone have experience crossing a White bull and a Braunvieh cow? Color, birth weight, carcass quality, disposition, etc.? Larry
