With the lack of rain last season, the hay is more than sparse around the southeast. I purchased 3 650lb bales of Timothy/Orchard/Alfalfa bales this morning and paid $74 each, totally $222 for just over a week's worth of hay. This is not only hard on the pocketbook, but hard on all of us farmers just trying to get through till the grass starts to grow again. I have heard of local farmers feeding recycled chicken bedding, but have not the desire to go down that road. Does anyone have any ideas of what else, aside from grain, to help get these cattle through to warmer weather?

April 2012 issue of Beef magazine has an araticle called "Buzz Killers". According to some research, the use of fly killers containing PYRETHROIDS on your bull may cause bull semen effectiveness to go to near zero. Semen will return to normal about 4 weeks after you discontinue use of the fly spray. See "beefmagazine.com". If you have a "dry spell" in your calving and cannot explain it by the weather during breeding season, this may be a contributing factor. Larry

Larry,
Thanks for the link.
I expect that we will have to pull out every trick in the book to control flies this year. We have already seen more flies than normal on the cattle and around the house. I suppose this is one of the paybacks for having an extremely mild winter.
