This summer I have been working for Penn State's Beef Barns and discussing with the herd manager the different AI programs. Here we use GnRH, Lutalyse and CIDRs and generally time breed if the cow doesn't come in heat early. I was curious what type of programs everyone has tried and how successful they have been. Although we do limited AI on our farm, knowing what works would have great value for those few that are AI'd. What have been your experiences?

Jess, I only A.I. heifers (about 20 each year) and use MGA, Lutalyse and heat patches with fair success (each year is different). I looked at the CIDRs when they first came out and determined they were not for me. My A.I. tech says his experience with them was a really strong, super heat. His says that if they don't breed on the first heat, he had cows that might skip a heat or two after that. Have you seen anything like that? Larry

Larry, I hadn't heard anything about it, so I asked the manager here. He said he has never heard of that happening, atleast not in such a significant number it would be noticed, especially not two heats. He wondered if your AI tech had his experience with dairy or beef, mostly because it is his experience that its harder to detect heats in dairy herds in general. Thanks for your input. Jess

Jess,
So your manager admits that it happens with one heat missed? That is not good in the "real world". Perhaps some university could document the results and see if there is any scientific evidence of significance. My tech breeds show steer beef cows but does not use CIDRs any more. Larry
