Hi All, I wanted to ask if any of you have ever experienced clover bloat, or bloat from grass teteny in your whites? In my area of the country, low magnesium levels are normal, so my cattle get a hi-mag mineral mix.
Just curious and if so, how do you deal with it?
With the other breed of cattle I have been raising, I have had an issue with nitrogen bloat on the old bull, and now his 10 month old son. I got the issue handled, yet amazingly, no issues from the girls.
Thanks Sherry

Never had a issue in KY. My pastures have a fair amount of red clover, however they are mostly fescue. I normally keep a general purpose mineral mix available year round, however it is not a high-mag variety.

Last year I had a 10 month old heifer that bloated. I went to the local animal health supply store and bought an oral bloat medication and gave it to her. I waited about 15 minutes and it did not have an effect so I called the vet. When we were putting her in the chute for the vet to tube her she laid down and died.
The vet told me she had free air bloat of which there is no known cause. I treated her for frothy bloat and that is why the meds didn't help.
This is the first time I had bloat in a White Park in my 14 years. I don't think I ever got a free education and this one was costly because she was a darn good heifer.
